Objectives

Objectives are precise, actionable statements that describe what a learner is expected to understand or accomplish after engaging with educational content. They serve as a bridge between raw knowledge — such as concepts, facts, and proofs — and the instructional activities designed to teach or assess them. Each objective may involve one or more knowledge objects and is often phrased in terms of observable outcomes (e.g., “understand the definition of a convex function” or “apply the chain rule to compute derivatives”). Learning objectives guide the development of lessons and assessments, help structure curricula, and support learners in tracking their progress through a knowledge domain.

There are two main categories of objectives:

  1. Low-level objectives such as remember and understand that apply to any concept or fact.
  2. High-level objectives such as apply, analyze, evaluate, and create that are related to various concepts or facts.
